‘Crossover’ is a term used in film and fiction to describe situations in which two or more characters, ambience, or objects from different fictional contexts, merge and interact in a novel setting. It is like a superhero falling for madame Bovary, or, for that matter, the social sciences engaging documentaries and films as tools for research and dissemination. Crossovers will overlap with the Alpenländische Produktionsworkshop (ZeLIG School for Documentary & IDM – South Tyrol Film Commission) and the Bolzano Film Festival Bozen, an international event attracting filmmakers from all over Europe, creating a crossover of populations, ideas, and languages. 

Discussion — academic and non-academic — will address, for one thing, filmmaking as a research tool and a means to teach the social sciences: minorities, conflict, inequalities, and sustainability will be investigated through the universal language of film. A special focus will be dedicated to audience design & development, that is, on strategies instrumental to creating audiences for independent films & documentaries (as vehicles of democratic ideas and mores). The idea is that audience development and audience strategy are not marketing tactics but rather social & political tools for shaping democratic publics. The seminar is part of an ongoing effort, by unibz (in cooperation with IDM - Film Commission South Tyrol, the ZeLIG School for Documentary, and Filmclub), to explore non-canonical, expanding means of dissemination of ideas and research.

The dissolution of marital and cohabiting relationships affects the wellbeing of individuals wellbeing and has profound implications for the society. Compatibility between the partners has always been an important factor for such relationships—both for the returns to relationship derived from production complementarities and for those derived from household consumption, which in turn determines thestability of relationships. At the same time, partner’s addictive behaviours such as problem gambling tend to have detrimental effects on the relationships. However, robust quantitative evidence is hard to come by. Thus, in this paper we investigate how the stability of the relationships are affected bypartners’ compatibility in personalities (measured by Big-Five traits) and non-cognitive skills (locus of control), and by the risks of them engaging in problem gambling.  We analysis 11,617 relationship episodes and the 29,149 birth episodes within these relationships of 10,827 women in Australia. The sample is constructed retrieving the history of these women from 20 waves of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey. We model the relationship and birth processes simultaneously with a joint duration model featured with non-parametric duration dependence, time-varying covariates, and unobserved heterogeneity. We also investigate how matching (or mis-matching) in the characteristics of the couples such as ethnicity, education, and age may affect the duration of relationships.

We advance current debates on authenticity byproviding a strategy-level examination of its emergence as a strategizingprocess composed of the strategists’ behaviors and narratives. Buildingconnections with the authenticity literature and adopting a stage performanceperspective inspired by aesthetic or theatre art, we investigate strategyauthenticity, which we refer to as the equilibrium of the dynamic mechanism ofchange constructed via the strategists’ behaviors and narratives, by asking howit emerges over time. Through a 12-month in-depth qualitative case study of thestrategizing process of a renowned UK business, we found that a strategy canbecome ‘inauthentic’ in the eyes of internal and external audiences (strategyreceivers) when the strategists’ behaviors and narrative conflict. Thesemismatches emerge in the form of feelings of strategy inauthenticity.These feelings of strategy inauthenticity switch between a latent andactive status with operational intensifiers. Our process model ofstrategy authenticity provides a revised view of authenticity in thestrategizing process and serves as a springboard for the strategists within theorganization to reconsider their performance by creating behaviorcompatibility and narrative conformity.
