On Monday 7th April, Thomas Streifeneder, Head of the Institute of Regional Development and Location Management, will travel to Luxemburg to take part in the kick-off of a new project on harmonised datasets on local units (LAU 2) at the European level within the programme ‘European Observation Network for Territorial Development and Cohesion’ (ESPON).
The ESPON 2013 Programme was created in 2007 by the European Commission to support the development of policy, which promotes territorial cohesion and a harmonious development of the European territory. The programme provides comparable information, evidence, analyses and scenarios on framework conditions for the development of regions and larger territories.
EURAC’s Institute for Regional Development recently won a prestigious call to contribute to the ESPON programme with a project that aims to update indicators and maps and harmonize dataset at the broad EU level. In their work, they will collect and update data at the municipal level on a timescale of 2001 to 2011 and make them comparable across years and sources. The results of the project should create the scientific basis for the preparation of effective territorial policies. Indeed, the results will be made available for the use of policy makers and practitioners at all administrative levels for the formulation of policy options in development strategies and planning instruments.
